Vogue Italia January 2021 - The Animal Issue

For the first time in its print history, Vogue Italia has dedicated its entire January 2021 issue to animals. After month’s spent at home during 2020, Vogue Italia hopes to re-inspire their readers' appreciation for the natural world. The issue aims to refocus our attention on the environmental emergency facing our planet, reminding us that we do not inhabit this earth alone.

In his editors’ letter, Emanuele Farneti writes,
“We have let animals take over our physical and digital space. We wanted it to be an invitation to refocus on the natural world after months spent at home, drawing our attention back to the environmental emergency that has been made no less urgent by the tragedy of the pandemic, and highlighting a lesson from the year that has just ended: quite simply, that the world does not revolve around humans."

The January issue has seven collectible covers, with cover art direction/photography by Heji Shin, Alessandra Sanguinetti, Johnny Dufort, and Tschabalala Self. Creative Director Ferdinando Verderi further emphasises that “This issue of Vogue Italia aims to make us think about the relationship between the world of fashion and the world of animals – a delicate and important relationship that is key to defining a future ethical and sustainable fashion.”

Whilst this January issue may be the first dedicated to animals, 2020 January’s issue also brought the reader’s attention to the environmental emergency facing the planet. The Vogue Italia team created the now iconic ‘Illustrated’ issue, made entirely of illustrated and digitally designed content.

“The Italian team wanted to show that art and stunning fashion imagery can be created without causing any costs – travel, shipping or waste – to the environment.”

The issue was an instant phenomenon and helped to further open the conversation about magazines, and the wider fashion industry as a whole, realistically moving towards a more sustainable future.

For many, the month of January offers a chance to refocus on new beginnings, a time to set new goals and values. Vogue Italia have once again used this time to symbolise their collective goals towards a more environmentally conscious future.
